What exactly do you mean by Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery ? Do you use plastic materials always?

A: Plastic Surgery means a branch of surgical specialty where we try to mould or give shape to the tissues. Cosmetic Surgery is a part of Plastic Surgery where we concentrate on surgical methods to improve ones look and appearance. Actually plastic Surgery is the specialty of wound healing and we deal with all kinds of non healing wounds, chronic ulcers like diabetic ulcer etc. We do not always use Plastic or foreign materials.

 

Can you make one ugly looking person transform into a beautiful person?

A: There are limitations. We can improve to certain level only. One must be mature enough to understand the procedure and have realistic expectation about the results.

 

If you go to a Plastic Surgeon, you will not have scars after the operation. Is it true?

A: That is not true. Healing of any wound is with scar tissue. But a Plastic Surgeon takes extreme care to get a least visible scar by placing the incision in the natural creases of the body. You must realize that the scars are permanent and it will take three months to one year to look their best.

 

What are the specialized areas of Plastic surgery?

In addition to Cosmetic surgery which itself is very vast, Plastic Surgeons are the best doctors to manage BURNS, Facial injuries and Hand injuries, Congential defects like cleft lip, deformities of ear, Hypospadias, fused fingers, Abdominal hernias, skin tumours and very importantly chronic ulcers like diabetic ulcers in the foot.

 

Every body talks about liposuction? What is it?

Liposuction is really a very useful procedure to remove localized deposits of fat from the body by an extremely small unnoticeable incision. One must realize that it is not a method of weight reduction.

 

How easy is the liposuction?

It is a surgical procedure. It can be done under general Anesthesia or local anesthesia. Patient can go home the same day, After liposuction, compressive elastic garments should be worn for 3 weeks to 3 months for better results.

 

What kind of patients benefit from liposuction?

It is the method of choice in men with fat deposits in the breast called Gynaecomastia. In females,. Fat collection in the abdomen, flanks, hips, upper thighs and nape of the necks are the common sites for liposuction.

 

Why are the fat deposits on my hips, thighs and waist so hard to budge, even though I am exercising and have a sensible diet?

Many women gain weight on their hips and thighs during their tennage years. Often this is of a genetic predisposition. The main contributors to later fat deposition, however, are hormonal changes in a woman, such as pregnancies, menopause or hormone replacement therapy. We encourage patients to have a healthy diet and regular exercise, but this is not sufficient for many patients. Treatment option include liposculpture either with a traditional procedure or sometimes other surgical procedures such as a tummy tuck, or a thigh lift. Once again, one must realize that liposuction is not a method for weight reduction!!!!

 

What are other common plastic surgery demands you come across ?

A. Pendulous abdomen and big breasts are very common . They are usually seen after multiple pregnancies. Many women suffer from the hanging pounds of flesh and there after effects like difficulty in walking, knee and heel pain. Some women have neck and back pain. Truly speaking surgeries for pendulous abdomen and big breasts are not cosmetic surgeries. They are surgeries related to functional restoration.

 

What type of scar results from the breast reduction operation?

A. Many patients with large breasts over D size become quite symptomatic, suffering from back pain, neck strain and the inability to wear certain clothes. They often inquire about breast reduction and are concerned about what types of scar result from the different procedure. The scars usually lie in the undersurface of the breast and not visible. 
Breast reduction is one of the most successful operations as grateful for the new shape, size and the elimination of symptoms associated with having large breasts.

 

What about small pendulous breasts?anything can be done to improve?

A. Definetely. Small hanging breasts make a woman depressed and withdrawn. She loses herself confidence. Various sizes of breasts and are available. By a simple surgical procedure breast can be made bigger and the sagging can be corrected.

 

What type of implant do you prefer for breast enhancement?

A. The choice is contingent upon the patient's shape, the condition of the breast tissue, whether there is droop (ptosis) of the breasts and the overall figure shape. In over 90% of cases, I use a ssaline implant. The smooth walled saline is ideal for the younger patient who has never had an implant, has very little ptosis of the breasts and wants to have a C or C+ brassiere size.

 

Do you have any solution for sagging skin of the face and neck?

A. Sagging is a natural process of aging. Jowls and sagging can be corrected by FACE LIFT procedure. It is major surgical procedure. Many forms of facial rejuvenation methods are practiced. Featherlift with Aptos threads, fillers and face peels are office procedures which give considerable improvement in selected patients.

 

Baggy and puffy eyelids are also a common problems in the old age. Can you correct it?

A. Yes. By a simple surgery the excess fat can be removed or repositioned to give a better look. Trans conjunctival approach gives a scarless result.

 

What about wrinkles in the face?

A. Lot of new methods have been developed for wrinkles. Botox injection is the most popular non surgical method of tackling the wrinkles of forehead which gives a tired or “always anxious” look.
There are many fillers either synthetic, natural, temporary or permananent ones are in the market. Ones own fat is the best filler to smoothen out deep wrinkles. Autologous fat is also used to give a youthful appearance to the hand. 
Semi permanent fillers are better than permanent filler where a very minor imperfection will show up for a life time. Acid peels are another good method in fair skin for facial rejuvenation.

 

What is a good age to have my child's ears set back?

A. Bat ears or very prominenant ears usually cause parents concern when their child is attending pre-school or kindergarten. Because the ear is near adult size by the age of six, it is safe to consider surgery at this age. Protuberant ears can attract unkind comments from peers in early childhood and such comments may prompt parents to seek advice from a plastic surgeon.

 

Q. What is a good age to have my nose fixed?

A. The most common age for people to undergo nose surgery is in their young adult years between the ages of 20 and 40. The range of patients, however, extends from 15 to 75 years old! Improving a person's profile can dramatically enhance their overall appearance, and often Rhinoplasty is combined with a cosmetic procedure on the chin or facial rejuvenation surgery to balance and enhance the appearance of the face.

 

What options do I have for Lip Enhancement?

A. We can provide a number of excellent ways of enhancing your lips, either temporarily or permanently. For permanent enhancement, I use either a dermal graft or a patient's own fat. Restylane, Radiance artecoll are few types of fillers commonly used.

 

What do you advise for diabetic patients to prevent the ulcer formation?

A. Very good control of the diabetic status, good care of both feet like cleaning, inspection of the webspaces for any fissures, cracks, good quality soft, protective foot wear, moisturizing agents and stoppage of smoking will definitely prevent ulcer formation. Since diabetes affects the sensation of the feet, small wounds are neglected which leads to non healing ulcer. Timely recognition can prevent major problems. Once ulcer has formed it needs expert management by a team of doctors like Diabetologist. Chirapodist, General Surgeon or Plastic surgeon.
